The electrocardiogram in Duchenne progressive muscular dystrophy.

چکیده
Interpretation of the electrocardiogram in the Duchenne form of progressive muscular dystrophy (PMD) is still debated in the literature. The group studied consisted of 106 patients with the Duchenne type of PMD, aged 3 to 29 years. The duration of the disease varied from a few months to 15 years. One hundred one patients had abnormal electrocardiograms. These were of four types: type a (64 cases) showed tall R waves in V1 and deep Q waves in V4-6; type b (24 cases), RSr' and deep Q waves in V5_6; and type c (13 cases), polyphasic R waves in V1. The view that the electrocardiographic abnormalities in Duchenne dystrophy are a manifestation of the dystrophic process in the myocardium is discussed. The authors' material, however, failed to support this view but did support the view that the electrocardiographic abnormalities have an heredofamilial character.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (BMD) is an inherited X-link disease. The incidence of this muscle-wasting disease is 1:5000 male live births. Mutation in the gene coding for dystrophin is the main cause of BMD. Most cases of this disease succumb to respiratory and cardiac failure in 3rd to 4th decades. The slow progression of BMD and recent achievement of gene therapies make it as an appropriate c...

Background Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a deadly X-linked recessive disorder. This genetic disorder affects 1 among 3,500-5,000 males in the world. The majority of the patients are male, due to the type of inheritance. It affects most of the skeletal, the respiratory, and cardiac muscles, causing these vital organs to contract and eventually mortality.<br...
متن کاملAbnormalities of the electrocardiogram in female carriers of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
The algebraic sum of the R and S waves (R-S) in the V(1) lead of the electrocardiogram has been found to be significantly greater in female carriers of X-linked Duchenne muscular dystrophy (but not in women with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy) compared with normal women of comparable age. A similar E.C.G. abnormality is found in affected boys, and possibly certain carriers have a latent cardiom...
متن کاملPrevalence of cardiomyopathy in Duchenne and Becker's muscular dystrophy.
BACKGROUND Cardiac assessment was not done routinely in Duchenne (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) patients in Northern region of England while evidence was gathering on progressive cardiomyopathy in these patients. We wanted to find out the prevalence, progression and clinical features of cardiac involvement in Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy. METHODS It is a retrospective rev...
متن کامل100-fold but not 50-fold dystrophin overexpression aggravates electrocardiographic defects in the mdx model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Dystrophin gene replacement holds the promise of treating Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Supraphysiological expression is a concern for all gene therapy studies. In the case of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Chamberlain and colleagues found that 50-fold overexpression did not cause deleterious side effect in skeletal muscle. To determine whether excessive dystrophin expression in the heart is safe,...
